Oil pulling, also called “kavala” or “gundusha,” is an ancient Ayurvedic dental regime that involves swishing a tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 20 minutes. Doing this is supposed to remove toxins from your body, eliminate certain types of bacteria in the mouth and improve overall health.

As dental professionals, it is important that we understand the benefits and disadvantages of certain dental ‘fads.’

The Reported Dental Benefits:

  • Whiter Teeth
  • Cavity and Gum Disease Protection
  • Stronger Teeth and Gums
  • Less Jaw Pain

Coconut oil (the most popular among the oil-pulling choices) can be a great, natural substitute for mouthwash because contains antioxidants (Vitamin E being one of them). Coconut oil also contains lauric acid and monolaurin which means it possesses anti-bacterial and anti-fungal components.

Aside from its awesome anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, coconut oil also contains vitamins A (great for your skin), D (great for strong bones and teeth), E (strong antioxidant properties for skin) and K (aids in blood clotting).

Although there are many benefits that support the use of coconut oil as mouthrinse, it is important to remember it DOES NOT substitute brushing and flossing. Ideally, you should finish your oil pulling by brushing and flossing all teeth.
