Toothpaste has been around for over 150 years. In 1850, the first brand of paste, named ‘crème dentifrice’ was invented. In 1873, colgate adopted the recipe and started selling the paste in jars. By 1890, to improve ease of use, the jars were exchanged for tubes which resemble the ones we use today.
For those of you who desire a more natural homemade toothpaste, here are some recipes you can make at home!
Minty Delight
• Mix baking soda, a bit of salt, and peppermint extract. Add water in very small increments, stirring well until your paste reaches desired consistency.
Vegan Toothpaste
Mix the following ingredients:
- 2 Teaspoons vegetable glycerin
- 4 Tablespoon baking soda
- 1/2 Teaspoon guar gum
- 8 Tablespoons water
- 5 Drops peppermint, clove, or citrus pure essential oil
Coconut toothpaste
Mix the following ingredients:
- About ½ cup melted coconut oil
- 2-3 Tablespoons of baking soda
- 2 Small packets of stevia powder or xylitol powder
- 15-20 Drops of any edible essential oil of your choosing
Whitening toothpaste
Mix the following ingredients:
- ¼ Cup calcium carbonate powder
- 3 Tablespoons xylitol powder
- ¼ Cup mct oil (plus more for thinning if needed)
- Essential oils of choice (optional)
Although some toothpaste has ingredients proven to help with sensitivity, cavity protection and whitening, toothpaste is not always necessary. The most important part about brushing is just that – brushing the bacteria away from the teeth, gums, tongue and cheeks. Finish brushing with a swish of melted coconut oil or your favorite anti-bacterial mouth rinse as desired.
